We have always known this property as Broadmarsh Island. In our family conversation, it’s “The Island”. For our 32 years it has been a central gathering spot for our family year round. I spent my late teens and early twenties on the water around the island for entire days. My early married life found us on the water at dawn water ski-ing, right in front of the house, all Summer. My father and my kids have many fishing memories right in this sheltered area. My mother, who is not a boater, has always been able to share our enjoyment from the lawn and the porch. We have launched many trimaran sailboats from the boathouse, some as large as forty feet. A few minutes by water takes you to a sandbar near Swifts Beach, where many families and townspeople gather on a warm summer day. From there you have Buzzards Bay, The Cape Cod Canal, The Elizabeth Islands, and some of the best sailing, fishing and cruising, you will ever find.
There are cultivated blueberry bushes near the swings. Some of my friends of many years come from very far away to join us in blueberry season to enjoy great memories of seasons past and sometimes to introduce new friends and family. The winters, around the fireplace have been spectacular. We found the fireplace with the heat vents in the garage to work quite well for projects, as well as a gathering spot during outside family get togethers on a cool day. We have supplied many friends with pine tree seedlings from the forest. Walking at night on the pine needle floor is a special experience.
We have always enjoyed the privacy that the apartment area provides to our driveway. We do not get the people driving in who are curious about a road that leads from the street. The apartment property owners have always been very protective of our access.
While my dad has always been very careful and prompt with all maintenance, we have always enjoyed the charm of the island with as few broad changes as possible. This has also kept the taxes low. My parents are in their eighties now and our families have made homes in other places. We find that it is time to offer the island to it’s next family.
Cheers, The Bandoni Family
